Deniz Nalu Oguz

Hi! I’m Deniz Nalu, a creative soul with a passion for writing, the arts, and connecting with others. Growing up in a globally-minded family, I’ve always been surrounded by different cultures—speaking French, English, and Turkish has definitely shaped the way I see the world!

I’ve been playing the harp since I was five and later picked up the piano. Writing stories and poetry is my favorite way to express myself. I wrote my first poetry book when I was 14 and my first story book at 16, both of which deepened my love for storytelling. I also love performing my work in front of an audience. Alongside writing, I have a deep passion for the arts, and I’ve had the privilege of joining exhibitions in Paris and Istanbul, which has allowed me to express my creativity and connect with other artists on a global stage.

Recently, I received a scholarship to attend my current high school, and it was a huge opportunity for me to be among like-minded students. I really wanted to prove to myself that I could thrive, even away from my parents, and this endurance has shown me how much I’m capable of.

I was also recognized with a Fine Arts Award in Creative Writing, which was given to less than 5% of Interlochen campers. With this award, I received a $5,000 scholarship to Interlochen Arts Academy for fall 2024.

Family means everything to me. When my aunt was ill, I supported my mom through it all, and that experience really showed me how important it is to stay close, no matter how far apart we might be. This sense of connection inspires everything I create—whether it’s stories, poetry, or artistic expression, I want my work to bring people together.
